ABOUT SPRING DANCE ROMANCE AT CAMP SERTOMA

The area now known as Camp Sertoma is a very special place with a long, rich heritage. The mineral spring here was used by locals as a healing place for hundreds of years. Cheshire Hall was a popular hotel in the early 1900’s, serving visitors from all over the eastern U.S. who came with the hope of curing their ills by “taking the waters.” Although the Vade Mecum spring is no longer available for bathing, the camp itself still seems to exude an atmosphere of calm, relaxation, and healing.

Holding SDR here was an enormous challenge during the early 2000’s as each year brought increasing evidence of the camp’s advancing age and obvious lack of funding for its upkeep. We struggled to make even basic things work, wondering each year if Cheshire Hall would survive another season. Many TCD members contributed time, hard physical labor, and money to help preserve and improve the camp during those difficult years. We were relieved and elated when funding for the most urgent repairs and much needed life-safety improvements was appropriated and renovations conducted.

The SDR Committee is pleased to host Spring Dance Romance 2013 for the fifteenth consecutive year at Camp Sertoma. We are proud to add our small history to the camp’s venerable history, and to have contributed a little bit toward preserving its enduring magic and beauty.
